About cataract and diabetes

If you have diabetes, you’re 60% more likely to get cataracts — and you’ll probably get them at a younger age than people without diabetes. Poor control of blood sugar can speed up this condition. With a cataract, the lens in your eye becomes cloudy. This blocks light and makes everything look hazy. Cataract surgery, where the eye’s natural lens is replaced with an artificial one, can help vision. Sometimes diabetic retinopathy can get worse after cataract surgery.

What is cataracts and diabetes?

Cataract surgery is a day care procedure, wherein the natural lens inside our eye, that has become cloudy is removed and replaced with an artificial lens called intraocular lens to restore clear vision.

What are the causes of cataracts?

Cataract develops in the following conditions:

  • When the protein builds up in the natural lens of the eye due to-Aging.
  • During pregnancy infections such as chickenpox, rubella, toxoplasma, and poor development in the womb
  • Secondary – Due to diabetes, exposure to u-v light or radiation, taking drugs like steroids or diuretics
  • Other causes – smoking, drinking, air pollution

What are symptoms of cataract?

Blurred vision, glare, difficulty in reading, driving at night, double vision, frequent change of glass prescription are some of the symptoms of cataract.

How do cataracts affect your vision?

The natural lens become cloudy, due to protein accumulation, light falling on to the retina gets diffracted resulting in in blurred vision

What causes blurred vision in diabetes?

Macular edema and cataract causes blurred vision in diabetes.

Are Cataracts painful?

Cataract causes painless progressive loss of vision. But in the end stage, if left untreated can rupture and cause protein leakage leading to pain and increased intraocular pressure.
